Digital Encounters

The flood came, and the day did not end. Someone is still cycling the drowned street with the rain coming down. The nets are still set. A table is laid and steaming. Three bearers stand with white flowers, waiting for a rite that is already underway. A swing above the green water is still swinging. And deep in the ruins, a choir is holding one long note, because here the singing never stopped.

Someday this era will be told as a myth. A people built a small window, and a world came through it that they had not planned and could not close. They raised their children inside it. And when the children asked where it came from, the people gave the only answer they had. It was always there.

Based on the idea that culture is dynamic and constantly evolving, I assembled this piece inspired by the kinds of artifacts found throughout Mesoamerica. Stone figures, clay sculptures, reliefs, fragments that become part of other complete figures. A representation of the flow within the visual imagination of the people of the region. A mythical imagination of great complexity, shaped by conceptions of worlds beyond our own that could disturb the modern mind.
